Big changes at the Truro Mall: There’s still more to come…

By Amanda Doucette

The Truro mall made some positive changes this year, while trying to incorporate the theme accommodation, says marketing manager Jaclyn Johnston.

“Our overall strategy from last year to this year was to be more accommodating to all shoppers.”

One of the mall’s plans included their recent addition of free Wi-Fi, said Johnston.

“It’s brought a younger audience, especially at lunch and with school-aged kids.”

The mall recently started tracking online statistics and Johnston says, in the last year they’ve seen an increase in traffic from guests outside of the Truro area, including Antigonish, Cape Breton and Stewiacke.
“We’re getting quite a draw to Truro and that’s not only good for the mall, but the town too.”

The mall lost four stores this year. Suzy Shier, La Senza, Pets Unlimited and Peoples Jewellers. For three of them, it was a corporate decision to close the doors.

“It was a loss for us, but it was out of our hands,” said property manager Janet Carrigan “We’ve worked with it as best as we could.”

The mall welcomed Rossy, which opened in September. This helped the mall incorporate giving a variety for everyone, said Carrigan.

“It filled the exact niche we were looking for, for the location,”

The ten thousand square foot location opened in September and is the fourth Nova Scotia location of the Quebec based company. The mall gained at least 30 employment opportunities from the opening.

To replace Peoples, they brought in the Newfoundland owned company Bogart’s Jewellery in early October.

The malls first financial institute, Easy Financial, was added to the mall when they were relocating from the Fundy Trail Centre on Robie St. This location was an asset to the malls redevelopment, said Johnston.

“It really helps round out the saying ‘one stop shopping’.”

The food court is in the process of being redeveloped into a family-friendly environment, including family bathrooms and accessible seating for everyone, including those in wheel chairs.

“We hope this will be another successful addition to the mall.”

Recently mall personal underwent training for assisting lost children and autistic people after a child went missing in the location for a short period of time last year.

“We now know how to respond to that type of situation,” said Johnston.

Mall personal are trained in First-Aid and in the upcoming months the location is receiving further medical equipment to assist with any situation they may meet.
