End of year celebrations cancelled: BHJHS prom and graduation cancelled with no time to spare

By Amanda Doucette

Sandeep Sodhi graduated from Bible Hill Junior High, his two oldest daughters graduated from the school and he expected his third daughter to do the same.

Recently students were sent home with a news letter explaining the prom and graduation were cancelled.

Sodhi was most concerned about the graduation because it shows students their academic achievements.

“It was a bit of a shock for me.”

His daughter, like other students, has had her prom dress for months, he said.

“The reaction of my daughter was most concerning for me.”

Students spend hundreds on their prom dresses and now have nowhere to wear them.

Grade 9 celebrations are one of the first big milestones in a student’s life and this year students won’t get that experience, Sodhi said.

Students and parents were told in the newsletter that a pizza party would be held instead.

There was no contact made to parents prior to the newsletter being sent out, Sodhi said.

“It was a quick decision without consultation.”

Parents would have jumped at the idea to help their children Sodhi believes, if given the option or proper notice, he said.

“This should have been conveyed in September.”

Since the newsletter was sent out, Sodhi shared it on Facebook, and received feedback from other parents who are on the same page.

The school is hosting a meeting March 27 at 4 p.m. to discuss the events.

The meeting tonight will discuss what the change will look like and how the new change was intended to be more inclusive for all students, said Principal Dave Hazelton.
